US Army Sgt. Omar Masry, in Iraq, asks for
donations of books to Iraqi libraries and to assist needy Iraqi
women
and children
The Editor of the Arab-American Affairs magazine recently received the following message from Sergeant Omar Masry, U.S. Army Iraq:
My name is Omar Masry. I am a Sergeant with the U.S. Army here in Iraq. I am part of a Civil Affairs unit that is focusing on issues like District Advisory Councils, rehabilitating hospitals /schools/ basic infrastructure, and working on issues related to women.
Currently there are plans for Iraqi-run NGO's working with assistance from groups like RTI and Women for Women
( www.rti.org or www.womenforwomen.org
) to build women’s opportunity centers throughout Iraq.
These centers will focus on health, education and job skills training to improve the status and ability of women to empower themselves and their families. I am writing to ask for a donation drive by concerned Americans (especially in the Arab-American community) to donate books for the libraries in these centers.
Such items would be greatly appreciated in a country getting back on its feet.”
