John McCall of Farouk Systems Donates $1,000,000
HOUSTON, TX - Farouk Shami,
Chairman of Farouk Systems; John McCall, Vice Chairman and long time
friend Kinky Friedman visited the City of Hope, California, to
commemorate the unveiling of the plaque bearing the names of the
Mohammad Ahmed Shami and S. Thomas Friedman Diabetes Fund. It is through
this generous donation of $1,000,000 to the City of Hope by John McCall
that will help further the research into the possibilities of islet cell
transplantation. During their visit, McCall assisted Shami and Friedman
to unveil the plaque which honors both their fathers and the
significance of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Both Mohammad Ahmed Shami and S. Thomas Friedman passed away due to
complications suffered from diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune
disease in which the body’s immune system slowly destroys the cells
that produce insulin in the pancreas.
Upon their arrival, Shami, McCall and Friedman were greeted by the
entire staff from the City of Hope and given an extensive tour of the
facilities. This included visits to various laboratories to hear and see
first hand all the latest medical advances in the treatments of cancer,
bone marrow transplants and diabetes. Several of the City of Hope’s
top research doctors shared pertinent information about their studies,
findings and medical advancements.
Dr. Michael Friedman, President and Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Fouad
Kandeel, Director, Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism
and Robert J. Reid, Vice President, Development Donor Relations
presented Shami, McCall and Kinky Friedman with replicas of the plaque
that hangs in the main entrance of the Department of Diabetes,
Endocrinology and Metabolism.
