PRESIDENT CLINTON AND
BETHLEHEM 2000: Responding to a letter from the Hon. US Senator
Spencer Abraham regarding Bethlehem 2000, President Bill Clinton
wrote: " I fully share your view about the importance of this
event. In a year when Israelis and Palestinians will be trying to
reach their goal of a just and lasting peace, there can be no
message more powerful than a successful celebration of the new
millennium in the birthplace of Jesus Christ.I have already discussed
this importance matter with Prime Minister Barak and Chairman
Arafat, both of whom agreed on the need to ensure the success of
this project. The United States is taking a number of its own
steps, providing significant funds to build new roads around the
city and to dig water wells that will double the amount of available
water resources." On this millennium occasion a new CD
was released by Global Media: Jesus' Land, History or Mystery?

- ARAB-CANADIANS
URGE CAUTION: In light of the recent arrests of some Algerian nationals and the continued allegations by the media and security services
reporting that Canada is becoming a hub for Algerian and "Islamicthe
Canadian-Arab Federation (CAF)
issued the following report: We feel that the latest development has created an atmosphere of undue suspicion and unfounded allegations. We urge
community members to contact us as soon as you feel harassed or unduly questioned because of who you are. Please
remember you are citizens and entitled to the protection of the Charter of Rights and Freedom. The Canadian Arab
Federation is vigilant and ready to provide any assistance related to these developments.
The Canadian Arab Federation is worried and concerned about a negative public backlash against
Canadian Arabs and Muslims. CAF is troubled by the fact that Canada's Algerian community is becoming under scrutiny and that innocent Canadian Arabs
are targets for harassment and questioning. The unfortunate tendency by the media to use terms such as Canada being a
"haven for Islamic extremists" or Montreal being a "Club Med" for Algerian terrorism, only exacerbates tensions and creates
undue suspicions to hard working Canadians of Algerian extraction. CAF senses disquiet over the creeping xenophobia towards immigrants and that suddenly the entire immigration laws and system in
Canada must be changed.
Dr. John Asfour, president of the Canadian Arab Federation, calls on the government of Canada to lessen the fear that has
been created in communities across Canada and urges the media to refrain from sensationalism and wrong conclusions. The
so-called terrorism experts have created an atmosphere of panic and suspicion about people of Arab and Muslim decent. We
are concerned with possible over-reaction by authorities that could lead to a disregard for civil liberties. The Canadian Arab
and Muslim community fears a repeat of the Gulf War experience when the community felt targeted and misrepresented.
